Keen to grow your own food but not sure where to begin? You’re not alone. A lot of people love the idea of it, but the actual starting bit? That’s where it gets tricky.
Truth is, you don’t need a big backyard or a green thumb to get going. You just need something small, simple and low-pressure.
Herbs.
That’s where I started — a little pot of basil on the windowsill. No fuss, no stress. Just a small step that gave me a win and got me hooked.
Why Herbs Are the Perfect Place to Start
They’re dead easy.
Herbs are low-maintenance. They don’t ask for much, and they’re pretty forgiving if you forget a water here and there.
You can grow them anywhere.
In pots, raised beds, the garden, or even inside on the kitchen bench. Whether you’re in a flat or a house, there’s a way to make it work.
Quick wins = big motivation.
You don’t have to wait months to see something happening. Herbs grow fast. Snip a bit of mint for your tea or fresh basil for your pasta — it feels good.
Cheaper, fresher, better.
Buying herbs at the shops is a rip-off, and half the time they go slimy in the fridge. When you grow your own, they’re fresh, handy, and way more flavourful.
